How much do classes cost? Classes cost $56 per month for members of the YMCA and $67 per month for non-members. Do I have to be a member of the YMCA to take karate? No. You do not have to be a member of the YMCA to participate in the karate program. Do I have to sign a contract? No. There is never any contract to sign. Students pay month-to-month without any obligation. Is there a discount for family members? Yes. Each additional member of your immediate family receives a $5 discount on their monthly fee. How often are classes offered? Classes are offered twice a week. Students may come as much as they like. Can I come to try a class? Yes. All students may try their first two classes for free without any obligation. When can I come to try my first two classes? Students can come to any Monday or Wednesday class to try it for free. Individuals between the age of 6 and 13 would start in the Kids Beginning class from 6:30 - 7:15 pm. Individuals 13 and older would start in the adult beginning class from 7:15 - 8:00 pm. Is there anything special I have to do to try the class? No. All you do is show up and be ready to have a great workout. The best thing to do is show up about 10 minutes before your appropriate level class time and tell the YMCA employee at the front desk that you are there to try a karate class. They will tell you how to get to the karate room. From there just tell the karate instructor that you would like to try the class and the instructor will show you what to do. What should I wear? The best thing to wear is either sweat or jogging pants and a plain t-shirt. Please do not wear jeans or dresses. Also it is best to remove all jewelry. I have a child that is under 6, can they still participate in the class? Maybe. Most children under the age of 6 have a difficult time with the motor skills and focus required to handle a 45 minute karate class. However, there are a few 5 year olds that can handle the beginning class. If you feel your 5 year old has good focus and can do a structured activity in a serious environment for 45 minutes, you can have them try the class. The instructor will be able to determine if your child is mature enough to join the class. Please, no children under 5. A better alternative is the Pre-Karate Class at our O2b Kids facility for 4 & 5 year olds. This class is specifically designed for children that are 4 to 5. You may get more information by clicking on O2b Kids. I have previous martial arts experience from another school, do I need to start over as a white belt? This depends on the style previously studied and current ability level. Katsu Dojo is a traditional Shito-Ryu karate school with emphasis on quality technique. Students that come from a traditional school and demonstrate good technique may be able to transfer into our style at an appropriate belt level. Unfortunately there are many schools that do not insist on quality technique from their students. Students must be evaluated by one of our instructors to determine their knowledge and ability level. If this is the case for you, it is best to contact Sensei Jason at 352 331-1477 or at karate@katsudojo.com to discuss your specific situation. I really enjoyed the class and I want to sign up. What do I need to do? We have an information package that you can download which includes everything you need to know to join our program. Click on information package to download the forms. It is a large file so it might take a few minutes to download. It is an Adobe Acrobat .pdf file. You can download a free copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader by clicking on the icon located below.
