Frequently Asked Questions

(Feel free to contact us if your question is not answered here!)

How much do classes cost?

O2B Kids offers sevaral classes per month, including the beginning and pre-karate classes, for one low price.  Please contact an O2B Kids' Fun Counselor at (352) 374-2202 for more information and current membership prices.

Does my child have to be a member of O2B Kids to take karate?

Yes.  The beginning and pre-karate classes are one of the several programs that comes with your O2B Kids membership. Students may only participate in the Karate programs at O2b Kids Midtown if they are enrolled in the Pre-School or Afterschool program. Students looking to just do karate would be better at our Magnolia Parke Dojo.

Do I have to sign a contract?

O2B Kids offers month-to-month memberships as well as pre-paid options.  There is never any long term commitments.

Is there a discount for family members?

Yes.  O2B Kids offers a sibling discount.

How often are classes offered?

The Beginning and Pre-karate classes are offered twice a week.  Students can come as much as they like.

Can my child come to try a class?

Yes.  If you are interested in trying one of the karate classes, please contact a Fun Counselor at O2B Kids to arrange for your free visit.

Can my child start at anytime?

Yes.  Students can come to any of the Beginning or Pre-Karate I classes to try their first class.  Kids age 6 -13 would start in the Kids Beginning class from 5:00 - 5:45 pm on either Tuesday or Thursday.  Kids age 4 and 5 would start in the Pre-Karate I class which runs from 4:00 - 4:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

How do I arrange to have my child try-out the class?

Contact O2B Kids at 352 374-2202 and ask to speak with a Fun Counselor.  Your counselor will be able to schedule an appointment with you to provide more information about the karate program and the many other programs O2B Kids offers.  The Fun Counselor will be able to set up a time for your child to try the karate class.

What should my child wear to try the class?

The best thing to wear is either sweat or jogging pants and a plain t-shirt.  Please do not wear jeans, dresses, or any other clothing that is either too loose or too restrictive.  Also it is best to remove all jewelry.

I have a child that is under 6, can they start in the Beginning class instead of Pre-Karate?

No.  Most children under the age of 6 have a difficult time with the motor skills and focus required to handle the Beginning karate class.  The Pre-Karate classes are specifically designed to teach techniques at the ability and attention level of 4 and 5 year olds.  All kids age 4 and 5 must start in the Pre-Karate I class.

However, there are a few children at 4 and 5 they possess the mental and physical maturity to handle the age 6 and above karate classes.  If a Pre-Karate student demonstrates superior technique and mental focus, they may be given permission by a Pre-Karate Instructor to move up to the older karate classes. We usually let kids the are enrolled in kindergarten start in Beginning Karate.

I have previous martial arts experience from another school, do I need to start over as a white belt?

This depends on the style previously studied and current ability level. Katsu Dojo is a traditional Shito-Ryu karate school with emphasis on quality technique. Students that come from a traditional karate school and demonstrate good technique may be able to transfer into our style at an appropriate belt level.

Unfortunately there are many schools that do not insist on quality technique from their students. Students must be evaluated by one of our instructors to determine their knowledge and ability level. If this is the case for you, it is best to email Sensei Jason at karate@katsudojo.com to discuss your specific situation.

I really enjoyed the class and I want to sign up. What do I need to do?

Once you decide you would like to continue with the karate program at O2B Kids, a Fun Counselor can sign your child up for membership.  Please register your child online with Katsu Dojo by clicking here. Print out the waiver form, sign the bottom, and bring it to your karate instructor. We have the uniforms for sale from the karate instructor along with the option of a Beginner's Package. Please see your karate instructor for more information.

If you still have questions, you may email Sensei Jason at karate@katsudojo.com.
